My 1973  712 Ambulance

These are the first photos I have taken of it.

I will post more pictures since I have a lot of changes and mods planned.

This truck was purchased from Patrick at Cold War Remarketing on Feb 19th 2001. It was a long thirteen hour drive getting it back to Kansas City. It has low miles plus I had the upgrade package installed. I plan on using it to occasionally haul furniture and as a promo vehicle for my web site Furniture Knowledge, plus double as a family camper.

Future upgrades I plan on a two-tone paint job through out with a lighter color as the base. In the cab I plan on building a T shaped console with that fits between the roll bar padding and extends forward to the windshield frame. If I ever get all my water leaks fixed in the cab, I will add some insulation everywhere I can plus a headliner. I also want to build an over the cab rack.

The upgrades are beginning to show!  July 30th 2001

As you can see by the pictures, I figured out how to get the box off without having to call all my buddies or renting a forklift . I first fabricated corner brackets that permanently mount to the aluminum box's corners at the bottom. I attached them by short countersunk stainless bolts. The brackets each have three nuts welded to the inside. I then made the jack posts out of two sizes of square tube,  plate and channel. The posts are bolted to each corner plate and also grab the lifting loops at the top. To add tension between the two mounting points I used some aviation turnbuckles. The hydraulic lift comes from four small bottle jacks purchased off Ebay. I just unbolt it, jack it up, slide in the locking pins and drive out from under it. Instant pick up when I need it.

I also put together a fancy center console/drink holder out of Baltic birch plywood, maple, and mahogany. The future upper console will probably be made to match. I have added two windows, a bench seat/bed from a ford van, in floor storage with access panels and relocated heat vents. new tires, a TV/VCR, and a CB radio and antenna. I kind of set me back buying those seven new Dunlop Mud Rovers.

Here are my aluminum box dimensions for those who are curious.
The standard issue fiberglass box may differ.

  • Inside height - 54",

  • Inside height at rear well 64.5"

  • Inside Width 67"

  • inside length 103"

  • Width of rear well 27"

  • Outside length 121.5"

  • Outside height 56.5"

Progress as of 12/21/05

I have had to put this and the rest of my projects on hold since I sold my building where I worked on them. I have put up a new 40' by 72' foot building in my back yard, but I am still in the process of finishing the interior of it. I hope to get back on it by next winter. I will post pictures at that that time.
